In this video, I want to share my recent experience with a client who had eyelash extensions done at another studio just two weeks before visiting me. As you will see in the video, her eyelashes were in very bad condition.
There are many reasons which we will cover now.
Key conclusions:
- Apply eyelash extensions close to the skin (about a millimeter away) to maintain eyelash health and prevent premature shedding.
- Match the extension length to your current natural lash length to avoid overgrowth issues as your lashes grow.
- When building volume fans, use thinner diameters (0.03 to 0.07) to maintain a healthy weight.
- Ensure adequate cleaning space by maintaining proper distance between the extensions and the skin.
- Consider the client’s natural eyelash health and growth cycle when determining the length and thickness of the extension.

This customer had an appointment for a hybrid replacement. Its existing extension had only been done two weeks before at a different studio. Let’s take a closer look.
You can see that the extensions are attached very far from the skin. Yes, they’re only two weeks old, but they’ve grown too much for that long, and there are two possible reasons why this could be.
First, to maintain healthy eyelashes and aesthetics, the extension should be applied as close to the skin as possible without touching. When they are too attached, you can see this in the client, that the weight of the extensions causes her natural lashes to fall out, sometimes causing a natural lash to fall out prematurely. I recommend at least one millimeter away from the skin. This would provide enough distance for the glue and extensions to not touch the skin and leave enough room for the client to clean their lashes properly. But those were too far.
Second, what could be happening here is that full body extensions were applied to her baby lashes and it had undergone some overgrowth. To make sure the set stays beautiful, a shorter extension should be applied to the shorter natural lashes so that when those natural lashes reach full length, the extensions will still fit into the design of the set.
Another issue I had noticed with this particular set was that the attached extensions were too long and too thick for the client’s natural lashes. If the goal was to maintain the health of the natural lashes, we would recommend extending the natural lashes by two millimeters. However, in her case, the length is almost twice the length of her natural eyelashes. This diameter is also very thick. It looks like Stylist has used 0.15 diameter extensions to create some volume fans.
When using 0.15 diameter extensions as classic eyelashes applied one by one, it is not a problem, but when creating volume fans, the diameter of the extensions should be thinner and range from 0.03 to 0.07 diameters to maintain a healthy weight. Because of these many reasons, we decided the best course of action was to remove her extensions. Because they were so thick, I had to reapply the cream remover a few times to get the remover to break up the thick layer of glue. And finally, the really stubborn extensions that I had to remove using my tweezers.
Eyelash extensions do not cause any damage, but only when done correctly. So, in her case, the extension should have been applied with an appropriate distance closer to the roots of her natural eyelashes without touching the skin, applying a length and thickness suitable for her natural eyelashes and carefully considering her natural growth cycle .
If your natural lashes are thin, sparse and short and you want thicker, fuller and longer lashes, eyelash extensions may not be the best option for you. There are some limitations with eyelash extensions, as the length and thickness must complement what you already have.
I hope you enjoyed watching this video and as always if you have any questions or comments please leave them below as I always love to hear from you.
I’ll see you next time!
